The history of glass goes back to the ancient Egyptians. The earliest glass objects were beads that date back to 3000 BC. For the past 5,000 years artisans have been working to improve their craft. However art of glass working has carried a good deal of secrecy over the centuries and many techniques have actually been lost due to the unwillingness of master craftsmen to share information.

Scarlett Glass is composted of a mother daughter team, Sally and Sunny Scarlett, who work to carry on the long tradition of the ancient art. Sally (my mother) began working with fused glass 5 years ago and shared her love for the art with me. Fused glass simply means that the glass is formed in a kiln heated to around 1400 degrees. Though the medium of fused glass itself is rather common, the way in which we fuse the gold and enamel designs directly to the surface is unique. Though we still consider ourselves a team we now work in separate studios and on separate lines. Sally works in Edinboro, Pennsylvania and my studio is located in Brooklyn, New York.

Unlike semi precious stones and gold, glass is derived from silicates (sand) and does not require harmful mining techniques which damage the earth. An added benefit to using one of the most plentiful resources on the planet is that it is possible to have a beautiful high end look while maintaining a reasonable price point and remaining environmentally friendly.
